Palestinian refugee camps were established after the Arab—Israeli War to accommodate the Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled during the Palestinian exodus. United Nations General Assembly UNGA Resolution states that the Palestinians have a right to return to their homeland, if they wish to "live at peace with their neighbors". UNRWA's definition of a refugee also covers the descendants of refugee males. Many Palestinian refugees remain in Palestinian refugee camps to this day, while others have been absorbed into Jordanian society or the Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian refugee issue originated in the Arab-Israeli war , when five Arab armies invaded the State of Israel just hours after it was established. During the ensuing war, as many as , Palestinian Arabs fled their homes in the newly created state as a result of many factors. Some of the Palestinian Arabs who fled did so to avoid the ongoing war or at the urging of Arab leaders, and expected to return after a quick and certain Arab victory over the new Jewish state.
